Young, John Janssen. The seashore has long been the subject of fascination and study - the Ancient Greek scholar Aristotle made observations and wrote about Mediterranean sea urchins. The considerable knowledge of what to eat and where it could be found has been passed down since prehistoric times by oral tradition in many societies - in Britain it is still unwise to eat shellfish in months without an 'r' in them.

Life at interfaces and under extreme conditions: proceedings of the 33rd European Marine Biology Symposium, held at Wilhelmshaven, Germany, September The rocky intertidal region can be divided into four vertical zones.

These zones are based on height and tidal influence. These four zones include from the highest to the lowest: the splash zone, the high intertidal zone, the mid-intertidal zone, and the low intertidal zone. The splash or spray zone is the highest and driest area. This. The 35 papers which make up this volume bring new ideas and concepts relating to the functioning of marine systems extending from the intertidal, through the pelagic realm down to the deep sea.

The book covers many aspects of the biology of marine organisms and will have wide interest to all those interested in the life of the world's oceans. Intertidal ecology is the study of intertidal ecosystems, where organisms live between the low and high tide lines.

At low tide, the intertidal is exposed whereas at high tide, the intertidal is underwater. Intertidal ecologists therefore study the interactions between intertidal organisms and their environment, as well as between different species of intertidal organisms within a particular.

This volume presents a representative sample of contributions to the 41st European Marine Biology Symposium held in September in Cork, Ireland.

The theme of the symposium was ‘Challenges to Marine Ecosystems’ and this was divided into four sub themes; Genetics, Marine Protected Areas, Global Climate Change and Marine Ecosystems, Sustainable Fisheries and Agriculture. Marine waters cover more than 70% of the surface of the Earth and account for more than 97% of Earth's water supply and 90% of habitable space on Earth.

Marine ecosystems include nearshore systems, such as the salt marshes, mudflats, seagrass meadows, mangroves, rocky intertidal systems and coral reefs. International Seaweed Symposia have been held at three-year intervals for nearly 50 years.

In the early days they formed the only international forum for marine phycologists, and although there are now frequent phycological meetings their value has not diminished, both because of the increased commercial importance of seaweeds, and because of the unique mix of disciplines that the meetings.
